| In this segment of Eastwood Garage, appropriately enough, John Sloane of the Eastwood Company is on hand to talk about the latest in do-it-yourself powder coating!
A leader in automotive specialty products for more than 25 years, the Eastwood Company has now developed the HotCoat powder coating system that gives home enthusiasts the ability to powder coat parts at home and achieve professional results.
John begins by telling Dennis that powder coating is much more durable than paint and is more environmentally friendly as well. Instead of any “wet spraying” of any chemicals, the process is achieved by attaching dry pigment to metal by electrostatic attraction. John goes on to tell Dennis about the proper preparation and cleaning of the parts to be coated and how easy it is to set up the system. First of all, in the application, John says that it is almost impossible to apply too much powder. Unlike painting, there are never any drips or runs. Another great feature of powder coating as opposed to paint is the clean up, or the lack of it! With paint, there can be chemicals in the air and unwanted overspray on other parts or in the shop, but with powder coating, all you have to do is just sweep up the powder that did not stick. Finally, the easiest part is that when the item is coated, it can then be baked in a regular oven at 400° for 20 minutes! However, do NOT use the same oven that you use to cook food in! When you remove the part from the oven, that dry dust will have transformed into a wet gloss look that will definitely spruce up the look of the parts and will be more durable than paint. By the way, the HotCoat system has more than 50 colors to choose from, so your possibilities are endless. If you buy the kit, all the necessary components are included.
