| This week at Eastwood Garage, Keith Maney from Year One is on hand to discuss suspension upgrades for first-generation Camaros. As Dennis points out, these early muscle cars could certainly fry some asphalt, but their handling capabilities left a lot to be desired. Keith goes on to add that most of the time when we discuss these cars, we tend to remember only the good things and forget about areas where the cars didn’t perform well. Now, thanks to Detroit Speed & Engineering (a company started by a couple of GM engineers) and the good folks at Year One, you can turn your high-horsepower, poor-handling, first-generation Camaro into a corner-huggin’ machine!
The first thing that Keith shows to Dennis is a 4-link rear suspension setup from Detroit Spring & Engineering that features a Quadralink system that replaces the leaf spring setup on the car. Also available are new upper and lower control arms and the needed brackets for installation. Another key component of this suspension setup is the “Swivel-Link” that allows the rear end to move and consequently prevents binding. For the front end of the car, new upper and lower control arms are also available, as well as a coil-over shock setup. Sway bars are also available to help handling performance as well! Keith also adds that the beauty of these components is that you can do just a little bit at a time to improve performance. Pretty soon you’ll have that old muscle car where it will handle like a C-6 Corvette! Enough said, and it all sounds good to us!
