| Today at Eastwood Garage, our good friend Walter Vaughan from Steele Rubber Products is on hand to show us the latest in door weather stripping for classic cars. You may remember that recently, Walter was here to replace the weather stripping on the vent window of a 1957 Cadillac. Well, today he takes on the Caddy once again as he replaces the door weather stripping.
The first thing that Walter does is soak the old weather stripping in remover. It is best to allow the remover to stay on for 5-15 minutes. After all, this glue and original part have been on the car for more than 50 years! Next, take a weather stripping removal tool (that won’t scratch the finish of the car) and scrape out the old rubber. After completing this step, spray down the area once again, and use a shop rag to wipe away any residue. Now, before installing the new piece, test the weather stripping to make sure that it fits properly. In addition, here is an important tip: use latex gloves while installing the weather stripping so that your skin won’t come into contact with the adhesive. Next, run a thin bead of glue on both the door and the weather stripping. Then work the piece approximately two feet at a time. When finished, trim the excess weather stripping off the end and you are done. There it is! As good as new and in fact, even better! Oh, by the way, the best thing about replacement rubber parts from Steele Rubber Products is that all the pins and clips are included and are already on the parts! In addition, they have an unbelievable number of parts for an incredible number of cars.
