"Replacing Weatherstripping"
Written by Keith Fudge

Today in Eastwood Garage, Dennis is joined by Walter Vaughan from Steele Rubber Products as they talk about weather stripping for your classic car.

Everyone knows that good and fresh weather stripping keeps the good stuff in your car, and it keeps the bad stuff out as well.  Walter starts to tell Dennis about the different jobs in the installation of new weather stripping on any vintage car.  He mentions that some jobs are easier than others.  For instance, trunk seals are easy to replace, while window vents are difficult.  Just wouldn’t you know it, a window vent replacement weather strip is the order of the day, and it is on a beast of a ’57 Caddy.

This replacement is definitely a doozie because it means that the door is disassembled and the window vent itself is removed from the door!  First the door panels have to come off.  Then the vent window is removed from the track that also holds the regular window.  The installer has to reach through holes in the door to make sure the vent can be taken out by sliding it up from the top of the door.  After the window vent is removed, the old rubber is stripped away and the new seal/weather strip is put into place.  Rivets hold it tightly.  After this step, the window is reinstalled.  But wait, the job is not finished yet!  Steele Rubber includes some additional parts that are needed to make sure the job is done correctly and won’t have to be done again.  Door stop bumpers and bumpers for the regular window are also included so that you only have to do this job one time.  Believe us, once is enough!  To insure that the job will last, when Steele Rubber has to use metal reinforcements on their weather stripping, they use brass so that it won’t rust when exposed to the elements.  From cowl seals, to windows and window vents, to trunk weather stripping, parts from Steele Rubber Products ensure that your car will keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out!
