Rod Run to Ruidoso
Written

When people usually travel to Ruidoso Downs Racetrack, they are usually going to see horsepower in the four-legged version, but last October it was a different type of horsepower as Dennis Gage and the crew from My Classic Car had the chance to attend the 16th Annual Run to Ruidoso Downs. Held at the track against the beautiful backdrop of the Sacramento Mountains , this event has grown each year it has been held. Dennis spoke with one of the original founders, Bob Nall, who gave him some history surrounding the show.
Bob told Dennis that two clubs sponsor the event: The Early Times Street Rods of El Paso, and The Las Cruces Rod Runners. Both clubs volunteer their services and proceeds from the event are then donated to the Special Olympics. When Dennis asked just how much the show had grown, Bob told him that there were 80 cars at the first show, but today he expected more than 600 automobiles to be registered for the event. Street driven vehicles of 1972 and older are eligible for registration and it's just about guaranteed that there is something for everyone! As far as entertainment and things to do, there were plenty of attractions—there was a raffle for a high performance motor, a sock hop dance, games galore, fantastic food, and plenty of door prizes. With everything to do, plus all the great cars to see, Dennis was ready for some action and he made his way to the parking lot to see some of these fabulous cars.
First, Dennis found a rare treat: a 1934 Hudson Terraplane! Owned by Mark Barrow, this car was simply stunning. Painted in White Diamond Pearl and accented with Blue Pearl and Baby Blue pinstripes, this Hudson was a true head-turner! The interior was just as rich as the outside of the car and featured white leather, air conditioning, cruise control, a great stereo system, and even a built-in radar detector. Under the hood was just as fine—perhaps even more stunning as the underside of the hood featured a mural of mermaids in the deep blue sea! Powered by a Chevrolet LT 1 engine, this Hudson is a prime example inspiration and ingenuity. Mark said that he isn't driving the car now, but when he finishes showing it he will begin to drive it often. Way to go, Mark!
There were simply great cars and trucks in attendance and the bodywork and paint jobs were simply tremendous! One example of this fine workmanship was Jimmy Davis's 1969 Camaro. With two-toned paint and graphics reminiscent of a classic 1957 Chevy, this black and orange beauty made folks stand up and pay attention. The interior was a mixture of old and new with a modern console and gauges all complimenting the classic houndstooth interior. Powered by a RamJet 350 cubic inch crate motor, and with 18-inch wheels on the front and 20-inch wheels on the rear, this bad boy will definitely impress when the rubber meets the road. Thanks Jimmy! This Camaro is one sweet ride!
The Run to Ruidoso Downs is a great show in a spectacular setting! So, if you have a travelin' jones this Fall then you should stop in for the fun!
