It’s remarkable
to realize that approximately 20% of all cars on the road are
more than 15 years old, and more than 70% of all the cars driven
today have at least 75,000 miles on them. These statistics really
shouldn’t come as a shock, for after all, the average driver
travels about 15,000 miles per year so in five years that’s
75,000 miles! Today in Hemming’s Garage, Sam and Dennis
are going to take a look at some great products by Valvoline that
are designed to help cars that fall into these vintage or high-mileage
categories.
As this segment begins, we find Sam
and Dennis in the company of a pair of T-Birds: a vintage 1957
and a contemporary model from the 1990s. As Dennis is checking
the oil in the ’57, we discover that a person can learn
a lot just by observing the condition of the oil on the dipstick,
and by looking at the dipstick itself. For instance, if the oil
on the stick is thick or black, or if there is rust present on
a portion of the stick, it means that the oil changes are being
neglected. If there is foam on the dipstick it means that there
is condensation present and that the car isn’t being driven
enough, or that it is only being driven for short distances. Consequently,
if condensation is present then the car needs to be driven more
often, or the oil needs to be changed more frequently. In short,
keeping a close eye on the fluids that one puts in his or her
car can help to improve the car’s performance and extend
longevity. Today, the folks at Valvoline have developed a line
of automotive fluids that are specially formulated for older,
vintage, or high mileage vehicles cars.
Valvoline MaxLife Oil reduces engine
deposits and oil consumption for vintage and high mileage automobiles,
and also conditions seals to help prevent leaks. Valvoline (and
Sam and Dennis) also recommend that you change the oil filter
as well when you change your oil particularly on high mileage
or vintage autos. Now that you have the oil you need, what about
the other fluids that keep your car running its best? Valvoline
also makes the first automatic transmission fluid designed for
higher mileage transmissions. MaxLife ATF is a Dexron III®/Mercon®
and is recommended for use in GM, Ford, Mazda, Toyota, Chrysler,
and most import vehicles. MaxLife ATF contains seal conditioners
to help prevent leaks, as well as long-life friction modifiers
to improve shifting and eliminate slippage. MaxLife ATF also contains
advanced anti-wear agents to provide protection. Next, Valvoline
has developed MaxLife Power Steering Fluid with StopLeak. Also
designed for higher mileage vehicles, this product is blended
with an advanced additive that reconditions and revitalizes dried,
shrunken, and hardened seals. The final fluid product offered
by Valvoline for high mileage cars is MaxLife Anti-Freeze. This
product contains a low silicate formula that helps prevent rust
and corrosion, and aids in lubricating the seals and gaskets.
