Mopar Fest
Written by Keith Fudge

Last August, My Classic Car had the opportunity to attend one of the greatest Mopar events around: The Moparfest in New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada. This ear’s show promised to be the biggest and best yet with more than 1,200 collector cars, and more than 12,000 people in attendance. With this many “certified Mopar nuts” and this many classic cars together in one place, it was a sure bet that Dennis Gage and the rest of the My Classic Car crew were on hand to join in the festivities.

The two-day event is held annually for two purposes: first, to raise funds for children and youth programs run by several local and national organizations, that since 1988 have raised more than $640,000.00, and second, to give Mopar enthusiasts from Canada and the United States the opportunity to show their cars, meet, and exchange information. While we were there, Dennis met up with Ted Woods, Contributing Sponsor of the Wellington Motor Guelph, who said that this year’s goal was to raise $100,000.00. Ted also bragged about the outstanding weather that weekend, and then he lured Dennis away to see some of the outstanding Mopars and AMCs that were present. Ted was telling the truth to as there was everything from the classic muscle of a Hemi to the tough and reliable slant-six represented.

First, Dennis found John Chard and his 1960 DeSoto Adventurer. This long and sleek classic (almost nineteen feet long to be exact) has been restored and is decked out with a paint job of Antique Rose. The interior is also flawless and John told Dennis that the seats were recovered with NOS parts. As we made our way to the rear of the vehicle we were “finned” beyond belief! Everything was meticulous including the NOS taillight lenses and chrome that absolutely sparkled. John told us that this car was no trailer queen but that he drove it on a regular basis. He also stated that women really dug the color of this ride. Thanks John—keep on cruisin’. Next, Dennis found Blake Dryden and his 1965 Barracuda equipped with a 273 cubic inch Commando V-8. This car is also a driver and Blake has added some modern touches such as dual exhaust and disc brakes. The original V-8 is a solid lifter engine that came stock with a 4 bbl. carb and the engine dress up package that sported special valve covers and other trim. These old Cudas have a style and flair all their own and this one is surely a head-turner. Thanks Blake!

Moparfest 2002 also featured plenty of events for the entire family such as a Car Corral, shopping trips, a 360 crate engine giveaway, an engine blow contest, a cruize run, and a midway for the children. There was no doubt that a great time was had by all—especially by Dennis and the crew. If you would like to learn more about Moparfest, and would like to get information on the next event, you can give them a look on the web at www.moparfest.com. So, until our next road trip, remember, “Honor the timeless classics. Happy Motoring!”
