American Auto Club
of the United Kingdom Summer Nationals
Written by Keith Fudge
Talk about a feeling of the surreal! This week
finds Hemming’s My Classic Car at Billing Aquadrome in Northampton, England,
for the American Auto Club of the United Kingdom (AACUK) Summer Nationals.
The event was held on June 16-18 and Dennis Gage was on hand to take a
peek at some “Yank Tanks” that are naturally even in more demand in Great
Britain than they are here at home in the U.S.
The most distinctive feature of this European
event is that it is only comprised of American made vehicles, and this
year there were more than six thousand cars on display. Harry Tune, event
coordinator and secretary for the AACUK stated that, “Automobiles from
the 1920s through the 1990s are represented here and this is one of three
yearly events sponsored by the club.” On this particular day, the weather
was glorious and it gave Dennis the time and opportunity to see some of
the fine American autos, “over there.”
Dennis first spoke with John Miller, the owner
of the only four-door, 1955 Chrysler New Yorker in the U.K. John purchased
this classic Mopar in North Carolina, and a Hemi engine furnishes the
go. This American beauty still has the original carpet and headliner and
is equipped with the rare “record player” option mounted under the dash.
After all, the cool cats of the 50s know that there is nothing neater
than spinning platters and stacks of wax while cruising the countryside,
but on the other hand, changing those record needles is tough duty!
The next “Yank Tank” that Dennis spotted was
Bob Mitchell’s 1937 Packard 115C. This unique model is equipped with right-hand
drive and the full restoration only took twelve months to complete! From
its independent suspension and hydraulic brakes to the supple leather
interior and functional rumble seat, this American dream captured top
honors in its class. Congratulations, Bob!
This year’s summer event in Northampton was
absolutely fab, and if you would to check out other upcoming shows such
as the AACUK Spring Nationals, please check them out on the web at www.american-auto-club.co.uk.
Don’t forget! Whether it’s over here, “over there,” or anywhere, remember
the timeless classics. Happy Motoring!
