How Much Difference Does the 'R' Make?

A comparison of the C5 Corvette and it's race-bred cousin the C5-R

Corvette is returning to road racing with a factory team this year. The car is based on the new C5 Corvette that you can purchase at a Chevrolet dealer near you. However the C5-R is a vastly different beast than that C5 sitting on the showroom floor. We thought it would be fun to do some comparisons of the two cars. Here's how things stack up.

Dimensions

  2000 C5 Corvette     C5-R Corvette
Wheelbase 104.5" 104.7"
Length 179.7"   182.8"
Width 73.6" 76.4"
Height 47.7" 45.8"
Front Tread 62.1" 74.7"
Rear Tread 62.2" 76.1"
Curb Weight 3245 lbs (coupe) 2510 lbs
Fuel Capacity 18.5 gals 100 liters

It is noteworthy that the C5-R looks very similar to the C5 and yet the car is three inches longer and the tread width a whopping 12 inches wider in the front and 14 in the rear! You'll also notice the C5-R weights 735 pounds less!

Note the horsepower rating is 255 more on the race car. Our sources tell us that by spring of 2000 Chevrolet will be pulling almost 700 hp from the LS-1 race engine. That is awesome performance and remember it has to run for 24 hours at LeMans! For more information on Corvette endurance racing including a schedule of events you can visit www.americanlemans.com. There is going to be some great racing in the year 2000, beginning with the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in February.
